Sparkling wines of Italy: classification, description, characteristics
First of all, we will understand that sparkling Italian wines can be divided on the basis of "carbonation":
- Spumante. This sparkling is as foamy as champagne.
- Frizzante. These wines have less foam.
Types of Italian wines:
- Asti. This region of Italy is located in Piedmont. The production of wines that are called Asti in the same way as champagne is controlled by the state on the basis of regional origin. Most wines of this type are not produced by the classical method, but by the Sharma method, and using only Muscat varieties.
- Franciacorta. This type of wine is also controlled by the state at the place of origin. It is produced in Franciacorta (Lombardy). The classical method is used in the production of this wine and it costs much more than Asti.
- Prosecco. This wine is especially popular among fans of sparkling wine. On the basis of Prosecco they make a large number of cocktails, popular among young people. Most of these wines are in Veneto using the Sharma technique. Most often, Prosecco is chosen as an analogue to expensive champagne. Prosecco is made from Glera grapes.
- Lambrusco. This type of sparkling wine is made from the same grape variety. Very famous representatives of this species are: red, semi-sweet pink and dry. Lambrusco finds his admirers among the inhabitants of Italy and the whole world, although not as popular as the same Asti.
- Fragolino. Fragolino is a grape variety that echoes the Isabella variety that we all know. This wine is called so, because in translation from Italian it means “strawberries, and it is precisely it that is very clearly felt in the taste of wines of this kind.
