    Distillery Koskenkorva

Distillery Koskenkorva, located in the village of Koskenkorva in South Ostrobothnia, has a long history that begins between the 1930s and 1940s.

Finnish alcohol monopoly Oy Alkoholiliike Ab bought land from the Koskenkorva family, Jaakko and Elizaveta Koskenkorva. The Koskenkorva distillery was built on this land, where the first experimental distillation took place in the spring of 1941.

In 1953, the production of alcoholic beverages began on a permanent basis. The first product of the Koskenkorva plant, Koskenkorva Viina, entered the market in 1953 with the idea that it could be consumed in cocktails or as chilled schnapps. It became the most popular drink in Finland in 1960. Even today, Koskenkorva is the most popular alcoholic brand in Finland.

In the early days, Koskenkorva was made from potatoes, but soon it was replaced by barley, it grew well in coastal, fertile fields.
During the short summer months, the barley was stored in granaries to keep it stocked during the long and harsh winter.

Koskenkorva was initially produced in only one format: in a half-liter bottle. The label on the bottle reflected the many barns and fields that dominated the landscape of the village of Koskenkorva.

In Koskenkorvi, barley farming has been passed down from generation to generation. All those who today contribute to the harvest for the production of Koskenkorva proudly carry their special knowledge of specific barley varieties - such as Kaarlo and Elmere - that make the best vodka, wonderful starch and succulent feed for several large livestock farms in the area.
