Cognac production in Armenia was founded in 1887 by the merchant of the first guild Nersess Tahiryan at the first wine and vodka factory built by him in Yerevan. The alcohol was sourced according to classical French technology - it was the Yerevan factory that was the first to be equipped with two Charente distillation apparatuses and had appropriate facilities for aging cognac spirits under special conditions, while other cognac factories in Armenia were actually artisanal manufactures.
In 1899, the plant became the property of the famous partnership "NL Shustov and Sons" in Russia and its cognacs began to be delivered to the court of His Imperial Majesty Nicholas II. At international exhibitions, Armenian cognacs began to win the Grand Prix and gold medals.
During the nationalization of all wine and brandy factories in 1920, the Yerevan factory was the first to become the property of the state. In 1953, the cognac factory was transferred to a new monumental building - the pride of Armenia - and renamed the "Yerevan Cognac Factory". At this magnificent enterprise, equipped with the latest equipment, the famous Armenian cognacs ArArAt are still produced to this day.
